Born in Barcelona, Josep Bassal was first noticed in 1980, when he won First Prize at the Concurso Permanente de Juventudes Musicales de España.
Critics consider him a firm representative of the best of Spain's cello tradition. His activity as a soloist and as a member of chamber ensembles has taken him to more than 25 countries, performing at venues such as Madrid's Teatro Real or the Juan March Foundation, Barcelona's Palau de la Musica, the Auditorio Manuel de Falla in Granada, Detroit Orchestra Hall, Teatro Dante Alighieri in Ravenna, the Academia Española in Rome, the Teatro Reale di Caserta and the Conservatorio di Música San Pietro a Majella in Naples, the “Queen Noor of Jordan Foundation”, the Teatro Pablo Tobón in Medellín, the “Viva Cello” festival in Switzerland, the Los Angeles Cello Festival in 2004 and 2006, and at Merkin Hall in New York, among others.
