2014–15 UCLA Bruins men's basketball team

The 2014–15 UCLA Bruins men's basketball team represents the University of California, Los Angeles during the 2014–15 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Bruins are led by second-year head coach Steve Alford and play their home games at Pauley Pavilion as members in the Pacific-12 Conference. The team features two All-Pac-12 performers in Norman Powell and Kevon Looney. Although the freshman Looney is seen as a potential NBA lottery pick, the senior Powell became the Bruins' most consistent performer. After numerous non-conference losses to start the season, UCLA finished in fourth place (11–7) in the Pac-12, and earned a No. 11 seed in the NCAA tournament. The program produced its 49th 20-win season.The Bruins began the season 4–0 and ranked No. 22 before losing two of three games at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. According to some pundits, the Bruins had toughest non-conference schedule in the Pac-12. However, it did not net any signature wins, losing to ranked North Carolina, Gonzaga, and Kentucky. Beginning with their December loss at home to Gonzaga, the Bruins lost five consecutive games, their longest streak since 2009–10. After Gonzaga, UCLA went 25 days without a home game, the longest in the school's history since 1972–73. They recovered to win eight of their next 11. After getting swept in a road trip to Arizona, UCLA closed out the regular season with three straight home wins to finish undefeated (9–0) at home in the conference for the first time since 2006–07. However, UCLA had few wins against notable teams during the season, and experts widely predicted that they needed a strong performance in the Pac-12 Tournament to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins went 1–1, eliminated by Arizona. Although they were 0–2 against the Wildcats, both games were competitive until the end. Proving most major projections wrong, UCLA received an invite to the NCAA tournament, earning a No. 11 seed. Selection committee chairman Scott Barnes cited the Bruins' strength of schedule and improved play, even in their tournament loss to Arizona, as factors in their inclusion.

Founded in 1972, the Korean-American Student Association at UCLA has since strived to prosper as a significant representative of Korean heritage and pride on the Pacific Coast. Our member body exemplifies diversity and equality as membership does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, political views, gender or sexual orientation. Besides representing a wide breadth of the Korean-American student population, KASA also serves as a catalyst for countless networking opportunities as well as providing the base upon which lifelong friendships are formed.

Since its founding, we have also strived to develop both aspects of intrapersonal and interpersonal qualities in our students. The local Koreatown of Los Angeles (besides serving as a pivotal hub for Korean activity in Southern California) further empowers pride and celebration of diversity as well as providing opportunities for leadership, cultural awareness, and community service. All the way from a young freshman adjusting to the newfound rigors of college to the graduate readying for immersion in the professional world, we offer innumerable resources for any life path taken.

UCLA KASA, one of the largest and oldest Asian-American student organizations in the Greater Los Angeles Area, celebrates a rich and long heritage and now proudly nears half a century of representing the Korean-American student body at UCLA that stands strong with a population that easily reaches well into the thousands.

UCLA M.A.P.S. - Measuring to Achieve Pat...

What is MAPS?
Safety & U.S. Healthcare

* 98,000 deaths occur in the US each year due to errors in medical care
* 50% of these occurrences are preventable
* Healthcare industry is determined to improve and is imposing strict regulations towards patient safety

* Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
* Independent, not for profit organization
* Objectively evaluates and accredits nearly 20,000 healthcare organizations and programs across the U.S.

* JCAHO conducted its audit of UCLA in April-May 2004
* UCLA received a perfect score from JCAHO
* One of the main objectives of Project MAPS (Measuring to Achieve Patient Safety) is to help the hospital get prepared for the JCAHO audit in the spring

Project MAPS Overview
Project MAPS is an initiative by the Department of Patient Affairs, on request of Hospital and Nursing leadership at the UCLA Medical Center, and as a part of UCLA’s continuous effort to improve patient safety and the quality of care. MAPS has quantifiable audit tools that measure performance in clinical processes. Performance measurement represents what is done and how it is done. The goal is to accurately understand the basis for current performance so that better results can be achieved through focused improvement actions.

“To facilitate improvement of patient safety by observing clinical processes at UCLA Medical Center and provide highly reliable feedback to the leadership and management of UCLA healthcare.”

Audit Tools
In order to measure performance, MAPS observers make use of three main audit tools. The audit tools are paper based observation questionnaires that allow you to document clinical processes as per the guidelines suggested by JCAHO. These audit tools adhere to JCAHO’s patient safety goals for 2007. The three audit tools are described below:

1. Medication Administration - For correct identification of the patient for administering medication, JCAHO guidelines suggest that before administering medication to patients, at least two patient identifiers (i.e. patient name and Medical Record Number (MRN) or name and date of birth) should be used. Labeling of syringes will also be measured.

2. Blood Specimen Draws - For correct identification of the patient for drawing blood, JCAHO guidelines suggest that when drawing blood samples or giving blood products, at least two patient identifiers should be used before the procedure is carried out. These patient identifiers can be the patient’s name and Medical Record Number (MRN) or name and date of birth.

3. Hand washing - The policy, as described by JCAHO, is that caregivers are to wash their hands with soap and water for 15 seconds or use an alcohol-based cleanser between each patient contact. When applicable, all personal protective equipment (PPE) used by the personnel is disposed of when leaving the patient’s room.

Why should I join MAPS?
* Opportunity to shadow doctors, nurses, and the staff on the floors
* Access to many floors
o All the regular floors
o Intensive Care Units (ICU)
o Emergency Room (ER)
o Phlebotomy
o Pediatric
o and much more
* Interact with the nurses and the staff
* Explore various departments in the hospital
* Gain clinical experience
* Learn about various professions
* Learn about hospital administration
* Observe various medical procedures
* Very flexible hours (weekend shifts available)
* Meet peers with similar interests at our monthly meeting
* Your observations will be reported directly to charge nurses and unit directors
o Increase our patient’s safety

MAPS Volunteer Description

1. Conduct observations designed to improve patient safety.
2. Observe clinical practices in all inpatient care areas including Pediatrics, ICU’s and Emergency Room.
3. Produce quality data that will be used by Hospital administrators, clinicians, and staff members to further improve safety performance.

UCLA Medical Friends

Welcome to Medical Friends -- a UCLA campus organization devoted to the entire pre-medical experience.

Our mission is simple: In real life, doctors work on teams, and we believe that pre-meds should as well. Enough with the cutthroat competition at UCLA! Let’s help each other out because in the end, we’ll all benefit.

We aim to bridge the gap between upperclassmen—whom have acquired infinite knowledge about the rigorous pre-medical curriculum, community involvement, and social aspects of UCLA—and underclassmen whom will benefit from having an experienced student join them as they set out on their pre-medical voyage.

At the beginning of Fall 2012, our program will commence. Current UCLA pre-meds will be paired with incoming freshman and transfer students based on shared common interests. Tentatively scheduled is a formal reveal night where mentors will meet mentees. Pre-med mentors will be responsible for making sure their mentees are taken care of. When mentees have questions, they’ll have someone to turn to. When they need a shoulder to lean on, their mentor be there for them. This is how doctors operate in the field—as a team—and this type of atmosphere is desperately needed for success as a UCLA pre-med.

We are currently in the process of developing programming for next year, but we already have many great plans in store:

• Mentors will be in charge of planning themed socials for their mentees twice a month.
• We are working hard on a "Everything You Need to Know about Pre-Med Life at UCLA" presentation, which will be the topic of our first meeting in the Fall.
• We are working with to get discounts on MCAT prep for our members.
• Mentees will have the opportunity to "shadow" their mentor for a day to see what it is like to take upper division classes, do research, socialize, participate in community service, volunteer at the hospital, etc. etc.
• We will have networking mixers with doctors and medical students.
• We will hold medical student panels and informal mixers.
• We will provide updated information on research, volunteer, EMS, community service opportunities, and more!
• You will meet many great people, get a sweet tank top, and have a guaranteed AWESOME TIME!

We are currently looking to get one professor from EACH life science department involved with our program; we plan on having a panel of professors so the incoming freshman can ask course-specific questions and rid themselves of their pre-med jitters right at the beginning of the year. In addition, professors will serve as advisors to our organization.

Come check us out this Fall 2012 ... and spread the word!

UCLA Non-Traditional Students Network

The Network is a support system for students returning to higher education after pursuing other life goals. We function as a facilitator of resources, and provide advocacy, community, and support for the non-traditional student. The primary mission of The Network is to be a social and institutional support net for the diverse and growing demographic of non-traditional students who, although large in number, are often over looked in a system geared toward tradition.

What is a non-traditional student?
-Anyone returning to school after taking a break from their educational goals.
-Working professionals finishing a degree or working on a new one.
-Parents returning to school after starting a family.
-People returning from military service.
-Older students returning to school after taking time of to pursue other life goals
-Transfer students
-Part-time students
-Commuter students
-Married students
-Students who work full-time while enrolled and are financially independent
-And more!

The 'non-traditional student' experience, and identity, falls outside of a traditional high school-to-college path. Despite the size and prevalence of the non-traditional student community most college systems are geared toward the traditional student. One glaring example of this is that non-traditional students now constitute about 40% of college students nationally and about 30% of UCLA's population, yet, there is no system in place to ensure effective communication between the college and the large non-traditional student base, there is no official transfer center on the UCLA campus, no place for students in this position to gather or go for support and amenity.

The Network at UCLA takes a more deliberate approach in bringing all students into the Bruin family, supporting and advocating specifically for those who took a 'non-traditional' path to get here.
